Gibson Engineering Motorsport EPAS
Gibson Engineering has developed a motorsport based Electronic Power Assisted Steering Unit. The project came to life as a branch of the GH-20 project.
This was due to the ever increasing aerodynamic loads forcing the tyres into the ground, this linked with the required suspension geometry means the GH-20 at race pace is driver fatiguing without EPAS.
The task was set, the system had to be as light as possible to keep the car near to the lower weight limit, but durable and easily servicable. To keep the drivers cockpit clear we had a bespoke steering rack produced by Titan with double pinion gears, this allowed the EPAS gearbox to be mounted in the front nose, keeping weight forwards.
When it comes to the circuitry and software, we called in the specialists. We worked with a local company who are experts in electronics with a portfolio bursting with big names. Each component on the board is selected for its reliablity, with a bias to quality over cost. This is reflected in the final product, it is not a cheap piece of equipment, it is a precise tool for reducing lap times.
During the design stages, universal fitment was a key part of the specification. We created two units, one being bespoke to fit our GH-20, however will still be a suitable option for the majority of cars. The second unit is a more fitment friendly design, with 4 points allowing fitment in any orientation required. If either system doesn't suit your fitments needs, as the designs are our own, we can easily draw you up a bespoke housing with little cost incurred
